Water safety during Heat Alert

As very high temperatures continue following the Red Heat Alert across Bedford Borough, warm weather can make local lakes and rivers look inviting.

But these can be extremely dangerous. Unfortunately, many people lose their lives each year in open water due to the hidden dangers and risks. Cold water shock, strong currents and hidden hazards can quickly put lives at risk.

Together with the Bedfordshire Fire and Rescue Service, Bedford Borough Council strongly encourages people not to enter rivers or open water, to stay safe and to enjoy them from the banks.

If someone is in trouble, call 999 and ask for the Fire and Rescue Service, do not enter the water. Use lifesaving equipment from the bank if it is safe to do so.

Lifesaving equipment such as lifebelts or lifebuoys are there for emergencies. Misuse or removal could cost a life. If anyone witnesses people misusing life rings, this should be reported immediately to the Environment Agency Incident Hotline on 0800 807060 and to the Police non-emergency number 101.

Along our rivers, we have lifebuoys and other water safety equipment available – they are there to help save lives without putting others at risk. If you see one missing or damaged, use the contact details on the device or on nearby signage.

And please report missing or damaged equipment to Bedford Borough Council so we can replace it quickly here: https://www.bedford.gov.uk/leisure-parks-and-sport/parks-and-open-spaces/rivers-waterways-and-fishing

Bedfordshire Fire and Rescue Service have also installed water safety boards equipped with emergency throw bags and rescue poles at key high-risk spots along the River Great Ouse in Bedford. Check the what3words location for:

Councillor Andrea Spice, Portfolio Holder for Economic Prosperity, Planning, Housing and Regulatory Services said; “Lifebuoys and other water safety apparatus are vital pieces of lifesaving equipment. Misusing or removing them is not a harmless prank, it could prevent someone from being rescued in an emergency and may ultimately cost a life.

“We would encourage all members of the public to respect water safety equipment, report any damage or misuse, and help ensure that lifebuoys remain available when they are needed most.”
