In the height of a heatwave, there’s certain criteria for any good top or blouse to live up to. Being breathable, airy and lightweight are at the very top of the list – so if you’re anything like me, you’ll have put all tight-fitting, sweat-trapping garments on the backburner weeks ago. At least, until the temperature (finally) dips back below 28 degrees…
Luckily, drawstring tops which tick all the above boxes (and more) are emerging as one of the latest fashion trends for July, and frankly, it’s to our delight.
Consider them a twist on a classic blouse or cinched waist shirt. As the name suggests, drawstring tops are as versatile as they are customisable. Whether it’s at the neckline or hem, these contemporary styles feature adjustable ties, cords or strings to gather the fabric, creating a ruched or cinched effect in seconds. Historically, drawstrings have been a fixture within boho fashion in particular – think peasant blouses, milkmaid tops with drawstring busts or smock-style tops with ties at the waist.
At the top of our wishlist is Uniqlo’s new Cotton Blend Sleeveless Blouse, which is proving the perfect entry point into the trend. Combining the coolness of 60% cotton with a casually polished design, this crew-neck blouse couldn’t be better suited for summer. Drawstrings at either side of the hem allow for instant adjustments as temperatures waver; simply tighten the drawstrings for a flattering, silhouette-enhancing cinch or loosen them slightly for a relaxed fit and more comfortable structure.
With three colours to choose from (white, black and a joyful lemon yellow), Uniqlo makes a strong case for our new wardrobe staple – and for the fact that adding a touch of texture and flair to a classic blouse is easier than you’d think. Not to mention accessible: at just £24.90, we’re seriously considering adding all three to our basket.
