Hunter Biden to launch $LAPTOP meme coin tied to infamous laptop controversy

(TNND) — Hunter Biden, former President Joe Biden’s son, is entering the cryptocurrency market with a meme coin named $LAPTOP, a reference to the laptop that became a flashpoint during the 2020 presidential campaign.

Biden promoted the planned launch in a video posted to social media Monday, compiled from news clips and politicians discussing the laptop.

The announcement follows Biden’s July Substack post in which he challenged the laptop’s provenance and chain of custody, while acknowledging that it contained records from a period when he was struggling with addiction.

According to The Wall Street Journal, the coin appears aimed in part at President Donald Trump, a longtime political foe of the Biden family.

The token is scheduled to launch Tuesday on Base, Coinbase’s blockchain network. Meme coins are cryptocurrencies typically driven by online attention and speculation rather than an underlying product or business.

The laptop, which was first publicly reported on weeks before the 2020 election, prompted intense debate over its contents and authenticity.

Republicans later cited material from it as they investigated Hunter Biden’s foreign business dealings.
