Girl swept 100 yards into drain after Florida water main break
A young girl was hospitalized after being swept into a drainage system on Sunday in Sarasota, according to the Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office. The incident was reported at 5433 Bahia Vista Street around 6:15 p.m. after a water main break. WFLA reports that when the water main broke, a nearby child was swept into the drainage system by the powerful flow of water. The girl was swept through the drainage system for about 100 yards. The road was closed while concrete restorations are underway, the city said in a Facebook post. “Sarasota County Public Utilities contractors worked through the night to fill in the portion of Bahia Vista Street damaged by a water main break on Sunday, Aug. 24,” the Facebook post reads. Several dozen people were under a boil water notice.The city said it was a 12-inch water main break.The girl was taken to Sarasota Memorial Hospital. She remained hospitalized in critical condition on Monday, WFLA says. A neighbor told WFLA that he was experiencing low water pressure in his home as a result of the water main break.
