HARRISONBURG, Va. – University of North Carolina women’s soccer (6-2, 0-0 ACC) picked up their first road win of the season in a 3-0 shutout against James Madison (4-2-2, 0-0 Sun Belt) on Sunday. The Tar Heels closed out non-conference play with their fifth-straight win and fifth shutout of the season.

Olivia Thomas recorded the first goal of the day in the 16th minute. The forward came in to defend a kick from the goalkeeper when the ball bounced off her leg and found the back of the net.

Freshman Lauren Malsom built off Carolina’s momentum to net a goal just four minutes later. With speed and impressive footwork, Malsom danced through JMU defenders before nailing her first career goal.

Although the offensive power slowed down for UNC, they headed into the half up 2-0.

In the 57th minute, Riley Kennedy placed a ball far up the field finding Thomas running full steam ahead. Thomas finished the play by powering yet another goal past the goalkeeper.

The Tar Heels continued to apply defensive pressure on the Dukes to secure a 3-0 win in Harrisonburg.
