Nepomuceno Punches Ticket to Big West Fall Selection Event Quarterfinals

LA JOLLA, Calif.—The University of Hawai’i women’s tennis team continued to battle in The Big West Fall Selection Event at the Northview Tennis Courts on the campus of UC San Diego. Sophomore Makeilah Nepomuceno headlined the action for the Rainbow Wahine> She won both of her matches to advance to the quarterfinals on Saturday.
 
Friday’s singles matches began with the Round of 32. All three Rainbow Wahine still alive in the main draw recorded victories to advance to the Round of 16. After nearly shutting out her opponent on Thursday, true freshman Grete Gull completed a shutout on Friday, blanking Long Beach State’s Paulina Franco, 6-0, 6-0. Nepomuceno held off The Beach’s Diana De Simone in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3m and UH’s Emma Forgac swept Julianna Galindo, 6-1, 6-3 to move on to the next round.
 
In the Round of 16, Nepomuceno showed her mettle, edging out Long Beach State’s Johanna Hiesmair by the slimmest of margins. Nepomuceno won in a pair of tiebreakers to punch her ticket to the quarterfinals winning, 7-6 (2), 7-6 (2).
 
In the other two main draw matches, UH’s Gull won her first set by a break, but dropped the last two sets against Long Beach State’s Cecilia Costa, 5-7, 6-3, 6-1. Hawai’i’s Forgac fell to Cal Poly’s Candela Aparisi, 6-1, 6-1.
 
On Saturday, Nopomuceno will take on Cal Poly’s Natalie Lynch in the quarterfinals. The doubles’ Quarterfinals will also get underway on on Saturday. UH’s Gull and Sophie Rachor will take on UC San Diego’s Hāna Gamracy/Julia Visaya, while Hawai’i’s Nepomuceno and Hannah Galindo will face Cal Poly’s Jessica MacCallum/Candela Aparisi for a shot to the semifinals. Both matches will begin at 5:00 A.M. HT.
