The Cycladic island of Milos is once again at the center of a heated dispute regarding unauthorized construction. A major expansion of a luxury hotel complex is reportedly proceeding in the Mytakas area, dangerously close to the island’s famous Sarakiniko Beach.
Despite ongoing legal challenges and an appeal filed by the Municipality of Milos with the Council of State, work on the site has not ceased. The developer aims to transform a 30-suite property into a sprawling 171-suite resort equipped with private pools and high-end amenities.
Investigations suggest the project is encroaching on a protected zone outside of approved urban planning boundaries. The municipality of Milos has filed an appeal with the Council of State, Greece’s highest administrative court, challenging the project’s legality. Although the case is pending and the hearing has been delayed, construction work has continued.
This follows a similar scandal last year where a nearby permit was revoked due to “serious irregularities,” though not before irreversible environmental damage was done to the coastline.
Sarakiniko Beach on Milos is renowned for its lunar-like landscape
Sarakiniko Beach, located on the northeastern coast of the island of Milos in Greece, is one of the Cyclades‘ most iconic and striking natural attractions. It is renowned for its unique lunar-like landscape, characterized by smooth, white volcanic rock formations that result in an otherworldly appearance.
The beach is formed from eroded volcanic rocks sculpted by wind and waves over millions of years. Its bright white rocks starkly contrast with the deep blue of the Aegean Sea, leading to a dramatic visual effect. The area is relatively small and does not feature a traditional sandy shoreline but rather a combination of flat rocks and small coves.
