STANFORD, Calif. – The Oregon State men’s soccer team battled hard for 90 minutes, but came up short after No. 6 Stanford scored a 90th minute winner to claim the 3-2 victory.

The Beavers led 2-1 in the 61st minute, but the Cardinal leveled the score in the 75th and then snatched victory with 36 seconds remaining in the match.

Arnau Farnos scored his fifth goal of the season for the Beavers, while freshman Tim Hoffman netted the first of his collegiate career in his first start as an Oregon State player.

With the defeat, the Beavers move to 4-3 on the season as they get ready to head into conference action this weekend.

Neither side was able to create much in the way of scoring chances early in the match. John Nicolson came up with a save from a tight angle in the 26th minute to preserve the deadlock. Fran Cortijo took the Beavers’ first shot on goal in the 30th minute, forcing a save with a shot from distance.

The Cardinal opened the scoring in the 33rd minute, hammering home a rebound from a tight angle to go in front. The Beavers pressed forward late in the first half, creating a dangerous attack in the 41st minute, that required a Stanford clearance within the six-yard box.

Farnos evened things up in the 44th minute, when his strike from distance deflected off a defender into the Cardinal net. The teams headed to the break level at one.

Oregon State came out strong early in the second half, as Farnos forced a save on a free kick. Stanford appeared to retake the lead against the run of play on a 61st minute counter attack, but after a lengthy VAR review the tally was ruled to be offside.

OSU flipped the script quickly after the restart, as Hoffman found the net off a rebound to put the Beavers in front for the first time on the night. The Cardinal leveled the score in the 75th minute.

The match opened up in the final 15 minutes. Iker Carbonell Garcia had a chance to snatch the victory for Oregon State with five minutes to play, but he lashed his effort wide of the target. Stanford found the late winner on a mad scramble in the box with less than a minute to play.

Sava Catlett and joined Hoffman in making his first collegiate starts in the contest.

The Beavers will head north on Saturday to take on San Francisco.
