Last year, Flacco wasn’t aware he was being traded from Cleveland to Cincinnati. So anything can happen, but there is minuscule incentive for the Bengals to trade their top backup or the Giants to part with an asset for a 41-year-old who isn’t going to change their season-long trajectory, regardless of his relationship with the head coach.

“In these cases, it’s not up to me,” Flacco said. “I’m on the Cincinnati Bengals and because of that, that’s my focus. Being here, doing the things that I need to do to get better each day while I’m here. Make sure I’m absorbing the game plan and all of those things.

“I get a little bit of a kick out of it, but it’s kind out of my hands. I’m a Cincinnati Bengal, and I’m doing everything I can to get ready for the Pittsburgh Steelers.”

The Giants recently gave Winston an extension. He’ll get a chance to run the offense before New York hits the panic button. If Winston is so awful that Big Blue is desperate for QB help, the season is probably lost anyway.

Backups with experience like Flacco will always be named as potential candidates whenever a starter goes down. Just because there are speculative rumors doesn’t mean a trade makes sense for either party.
