BERKELEY – With three members of the California women’s tennis team winning Sunday to advance to Monday’s main draw singles semifinals at the ITA Northwest Regional Championships, Cal is assured of having at least one Golden Bear qualify for the NCAA Singles Championship and could see two Bears advance to the postseason. Cal’s Mao Mushika plays teammate Naomi Xu on Monday, while Cal’s Berta Passola Folch faces Stanford’s Alyssa Ahn in the other semifinal. The two regional singles finalists qualify for the postseason.

The Cal duo of Mushika and Greta Greco Lucchina also advanced to the main draw doubles quarterfinals with an eye towards the postseason, as the regional doubles champion qualifies for the NCAA Doubles Championship.

Xu – a sophomore – was the first Bear to advance to Monday when she defeated Washington State’s ninth-seeded Maxine Murphy 6-4, 6-3 in the round of 16 and then bested Washington’s sixth-seeded and 96th-ranked Erika Matsuda 6-3, 6-0 in the quarterfinals. Passola Folch – the lone senior on the roster – followed with two straight-set victories of her own. First she beat Portland’s Dariya Radulova 6-0, 6-2 and then topped Stanford’s second-seeded and 58th-ranked Caroline Driscoll 6-1, 7-6(2). Mushika – a junior seeded first and ranked 17th – knocked off Portland’s Alaia Rubio Perez 6-0, 7-5 and then dispatched Washington’s ninth-seeded Alexia Jacobs 6-7(5), 6-1, 6-3 to set up her meeting with Xu in the semifinals. Passola Folch will face Stanford’s fifth-seeded and 90th-ranked Ahn, with both semifinals slated to start at 10:30 a.m. PT at Hellman.

In doubles, fifth-seeded Greco Lucchina and Mushika defeated Gonzaga’s ninth-seeded Emily Robertson and Elizabeth Tinderas 8-4 to move onto Monday’s quarterfinals, in which they will play Stanford’s fourth-seeded and 90th-ranked Valerie Glozman and Monika Ekstrand at 8:30 a.m. PT at Hellman. Cal’s ninth-seeded Passola Folch and Mille Johanna Moerk were also in action in Sunday’s round of 16 but fell to Washington’s third-seeded and 64th-ranked Matsuda and Carina Syrtveit 8-5.

The regional singles and doubles finals are scheduled for Tuesday at Hellman.

However, with rain in the forecast for Berkeley on Monday, tournament officials hope to at least get the four 8:30 a.m. quarterfinals played at Cal and once rain starts shift the remaining Monday matches to Stanford. Rain is also in the forecast for Tuesday in Berkeley, with the location of those matches to be determined. Please check CalBears.com and @CalWomensTennis on X on Monday for more information.
