NFL’s New Rules for Fines, Suspensions Revealed with Emphasized Punishment for Repeat Offenders

The NFL is hoping to improve player health and safety with the implementation of a new disciplinary system.

The NFL and NFLPA announced Wednesday that players will receive an automatic suspension if they commit three offenses in categories including hip-drop tackle, horse collar tackle, launching, hit on a defenseless player and blindside block.

If a player commits only one offense, they will receive 50 percent of their fine back at the end of the season.

The new system was developed in collaboration with the NFL Players Association. NFLPA president Troy Vincent told Mark Maske of Front Office Sports that the system is in place for one year only.

“Just to see if it works,” Vincent said.

Each player will enter the 2026 season with a clean slate. Players who commit one violation will have 50 percent of their fine returned to them at the end of the year. A single offense in certain eligible categories would allow players to receive the entire amount of their fine back once the season ends.

It was also noted that the NFL will meet with players who are approaching the suspension threshold, and their head coaches are required to attend those meetings. Teams with “excessive” rule violations will be subjected to increased financial penalties. Former NFL head coach Ron Rivera, who also played in the league for nine seasons, will be added to the pool of former players who oversee disciplinary appeal hearings.

Player safety has become a greater point of emphasis for the league, and the new on-field accountability system could lead to continued improvements in that area.
