President Donald Trump was covertly transferred to a secondary military aircraft using an airport catering truck prior to departing Turkey last month, following intelligence warnings of a potential missile or assassination threat from Iran.
According to reports from CBS News and other news outlets, the maneuver converted the presidential jet into a decoy carrying White House aides and journalists who were unaware of the leader’s actual location. The deception unfolded on July 8 following a NATO summit in Ankara. Trump publicly boarded the traditional blue-and-white Boeing 747 in front of news cameras after announcing on social media that he would take the older aircraft ”for old time’s sake” rather than a newly modified jet provided by Qatar. Once inside, Trump and a small group of advisers slipped out an alternate door into an elevated catering vehicle, which transported them across the tarmac to a waiting Air Force C-32A.
Members of the White House press corps traveling on the primary jet were directed to keep their window shades lowered throughout the flight to Britain, remaining oblivious to the transfer. When queried later regarding the closed blinds, Trump told reporters they were “probably on a dangerous flight.” He subsequently added, “But if I go, you go. Right?”
U.S. intelligence officials initiated the protective measure after detecting actionable threat data targeting the chief executive or his transport amid heightened regional friction. Both aircraft subsequently touched down at a military installation in the United Kingdom, where Trump re-emerged from the primary jet without immediate public disclosure of the interim switch.
White House Communications Director Steven Cheung defended overall security protocols without directly detailing the tactical maneuver, stating, “As the President has said recently, there are many enemies of America who have their sights on him, and we use every tool at our disposal to address those threats”. While historical precedents exist for employing decoy transports during sensitive foreign visits, the reliance on an aircraft carrying civilian journalists and staff has drawn scrutiny regarding transparency and passenger safety.
