MADISON (WKOW) — Public Health Madison & Dane County is looking for a dog that bit a person after attacking a leashed dog near Woodstone Drive and Westbourne Street on Wednesday.
The incident happened around 5:20 p.m. when a brown-and-white pit bull-type dog wearing a red or pink collar was running loose without its owner present, according to a news release from Public Health Madison & Dane County.
Health officials said the person who was bitten may need a series of costly rabies prevention shots if the dog is not located.
Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call the Police and Fire Dispatcher at (608) 255-2345 and request an Animal Services Officer.
Public Health Madison & Dane County responds to more than 800 animal bite reports each year. The agency recommends keeping dogs on a short leash and maintaining distance from other people and pets while walking to help prevent unwanted contact.
Officials also advise teaching children how to safely interact with animals, avoiding hugging or kissing dogs, and always asking an owner’s permission before petting a pet. If a dog fight occurs, use an object to separate the animals rather than your hands, arms or legs.
If you or your pet are involved in a bite incident, officials recommend treating it like a car crash by exchanging contact information with the other person involved.
