PROVO, Utah – A long journey has to start with a first step, which Tuesday’s matches provided at the ITA Mountain Regionals, hosted by BYU. Colorado State’s contingent took a few forward as the doubles bracket was introduced, along with the qualifying bracket for singles.
 
The team started by picking up a pair of  doubles wins on the opening day, with the pairing of Luana Avelar and Sorcha Caves sticking together for an 8-4 win over a squad from Idaho State. Freshman combo Leyla Tozin and Dylan Voeks also advanced with an 8-6 victory over a Boise State pair.
 
The only singles matches played on the day were in the qualifying draw, with players needing two wins to earn a slot in the main draw. All four matches involving Rams went three sets, with three of them requiring a tiebreaker in one of the sets.
 
The only CSU player to advance out of the first round was Tozin with her 4-6, 7-6 (5), 7-5 decision against Utah State’s Magdalena Nunez Pureco, later falling in the second round.
 
Wednesday’s play begins at 8 a.m., with two rounds of doubles, followed by the first round of singles play in the main draw which includes Avelar and Caves. All three Rams who dropped singles matches in qualifying are expected to play a consolation match at the end of the day.
