Women’s Tennis Competes at ITA Southwest Regionals

SAN DIEGO, Calif.—The University of Hawai’i women’s tennis team began play in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association’s Southwest Regionals at the Skip and Cindy Hogan Tennis Center in San Diego, Calif.
 
In the opening qualifying Round of 64, two Rainbow Wahine advanced to the Round of 32. UH’s Makeilah Nepomuceno held off Cal State Fullerton’s Martina Markov in a first set tie-breaker before pulling away in the second set for the sweep, 7-6(3), 6-1. UH’s Allaire Berl advanced as UC San Diego’s Hana Gamracy withdrew.
 
Both Berl and Nepomuceno fell in the Round of 32. UC Santa Barbara’s Emma Tutoveanu defeated Berl in two sets, 6-1, 6-1. Nepomuceno fell to fifth-seeded Kayla Chung from UCLA, 6-4, 6-3.
 
Hawai’I freshman Greta Gull will begin action in the Main Draw on Friday against San Diego State’s Gloria Alogo Piqueras. The other Rainbow Wahine will be competing in consolation matches. Also on Day 2 of the ITA Southwest Regionals, the Rainbow Wahine will begin their doubles matches all at the Skip and Cindy Tennis Center in San Diego, Calif.
