MADISON, Wis. — The UW-Madison Police Department will not renew its contract with Flock Safety and is in the process of removing the company’s controversial cameras from campus.
UWPD announced the decision Friday, but the department’s contract with Flock actually ended on June 26. The department said it is looking into a different automated license plate reader vendor to work with.
“This technology has proven to be an effective tool with our layered approach to safety and security in our community,” Chief Brent Pilsch said. “We anticipate engaging with our community for input as we seek options for an ALPR vendor.”
Flock Safety has come under scrutiny around south-central Wisconsin over concerns about data from its cameras being accessed by outside agencies like U.S. Customs and Border Protection and the Department of Homeland Security.
UWPD in March said they were restricting access to its Flock data for law enforcement agencies that coperate with immigration enforcement. The Dane County Board cut funding for Flock cameras in April and Fitchburg ended its Flock contract in May. Last month, the Dane County Sheriff’s Office disabled 26 Flock cameras.
