AUSTIN, Minn. — Officials are advising people to avoid all non-emergency travel in Austin and Mower County due to flash flooding.
Interstate-90 is closed in both directions between 6th Street Northeast and Exit 179 in Austin is closed. There is a detour in place.
Mower County Sheriff Steve Sandvik issued the advisory as floodwaters cover roadways and intersections throughout the city of Austin and on low-lying county and township roads. Sandvik warned drivers not to drive into water-covered roadways, saying vehicles can stall out in standing water or be swept away by moving water.
Public works crews are working to mark known flooded intersections and roadways with barricades. Officials say it’s critical that drivers stay off roads covered by standing water.
