Former Packers tight end Josiah Deguara cut by Giants
Christopher Kuhagen
Josiah Degura, a former Packers third-round pick, has been cut by the New York Giants, according to ESPN.
It’s the third straight year that a team has released Degura during roster cuts.
In 50 games with the Packers from 2020 to 2023, Degura had 48 receptions and two touchdowns.
Degura was the 94th overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft and the third player picked by the Packers that year. Of the nine players the Packers selected in that draft, only Jordan Love, the team’s first-round pick that year, remains on the team.
Degura signed with the Jacksonville Jarguars in 2024 and was released at the end of training camp. He was re–signed to the practice squad before being added to the main roster early in the season. He played in 15 games for the Jaguars that season.
He joined the Arizona Cardinals last season and was a roster casualty again following training camp. However, he landed a spot on the Cardinals’ practice squad. He ended up playing in 12 games for Arizona in 2025.
Degura has had just three receptions in each of the last three years.
He spent a majority of this year’s training camp with the San Francisco 49ers and had two catches for 12 yards in the team’s preseason opener earlier this month. But he was released on Aug. 24.
The Giants signed him on Aug. 26, but have now cut him a few days later.

NFL trades today
Christopher Kuhagen
There have been a few trades around the NFL on Saturday amid roster cuts.
The Kansas City Chiefs are acquiring guard Diego Pounds in a trade with the Baltimore Ravens, per NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo and NFL insider Jordan Schultz report.
The Jacksonville Jaguars are trading for quarterback Quinn Ewers from the Miami Dolphins in exchange for a 2028 sixth-round pick, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter. Ewers will be Trevor Lawrence’s backup in Jacksonville.
The Dallas Cowboys are adding a big body up front on the offensive line.
The Cowboys have acquired offensive tackle Broderick Jones, a former first round pick, from the Pittsburgh Steelers, according to national reports.
Jones is coming back from a neck injury that put him on season-ending injured reserve in November 2025.

Packers sign tight end Jonnu Smith
Christopher Kuhagen
Most of the news this weekend will be around who the Packers cut from their team.
But the Packers made an addition to their team on Saturday.
Smith, who is entering his 10th NFL season, will provide depth in a tight end room that needs it.
He’ll be slotted behind Tucker Kraft, who is coming off a torn ACL last season. Luke Musgrave won’t begin the season on the active roster as he’s been on the physically unable to perform list all training camp.
The Packers also have Josh Whyle as a backup tight end. He was signed off the Packers’ practice squad after Kraft went down with his season-ending injury in 2025. The Packers are Smith’s sixth team.
Smith spent the first four years of his career with the Tennessee Titans. He then played two years with the New England Patriots, followed by one year each with the Atlanta Falcons, Miami Dolphins and Pittsburgh Steelers.
Smith’s best year came in 2024 with the Dolphins when he earned his first Pro Bowl after posting a career-high 88 receptions for 884 yards and eight touchdowns.
Last season in Pittsburgh, Smith had 38 receptions for 222 yards and two touchdowns in 17 games.
Smith’s durability had to have been appealing to the Packers, especially at a position that has been banged up over the last year. He played in all 17 games in each of the last three years.

NFL roster cuts 2026
Christopher Kuhagen
All 32 teams will be making tough calls to players telling them that they’re being cut.
Every NFL team is going from 90 players to 53, meaning that nearly 1,200 players who spent the last month in training camps will now be out of work, though some will land on their feet with practice squad contracts.
Former Packers wide receiver Mecole Hardman Jr. released by the Bills
Christopher Kuhagen
The end of August hasn’t been a good time for Mecole Hardman Jr. the last two years.
Last year at this time, Hardman was released by the Packers, though he later signed to Green Bay’s practice squad..
This year, the 28-year-old has been cut by the Buffalo Bills.
ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler was first to report Hardman’s release from Buffalo.
The Bills later announced Hardman’s release, along with 12 others.
Hardman joined the Packers in March 2025, after winning three Super Bowls with the Kansas City Chiefs early in his career.
After spending teh entire offseason and playing throughout the 2025 preseason, Hardman didn’t make the Packers’ roster. He spent the next month on the Packers’ practice squad before being released again in late September.
Hardman signed with the Bills in November and went on to score a touchdown in Buffalo’s divisional round playoff loss to the Denver Broncos in January.
Across his seven-year career, Hardman has played in 82 games with 2,302 receiving yards and 16 touchdowns
He also has 1,134 kickoff return yards and a touchdown

Former Cedarburg standout, Packers TE Drew Biber cut by the Browns
Christopher Kuhagen
Former Cedarburg High School standout Drew Biber is quickly learning about the business in the NFL as he looks to crack a roster.
After going undrafted, Biber first signed with the Packers on Aug. 4 and he had the opportunity to be part of the Packers Family Night on Aug. 9.
But Biber was released prior to the Packers’ first preseason game on Aug. 13.
Biber got a workout with the Browns days later and signed with Cleveland on Aug. 20. However, he was among the early cuts by the Browns on Aug. 28.
Biber was an all-state football player and basketball player at Cedarburg. He started his college career at Purdue where he spent four seasons. He finished up at Minnesota last season.
Jacobs threw his girlfriend to the ground, causing her to hit her head, and taking and damaging her phone.
Both charges carry maximum sentences of nine months in prison and/or a $10,000 fine.
Asked if he expects Jacobs to be available for the team’s Week 1 game against the Minnesota Vikings on Sept. 13, LaFleur said: “You have to let everything play out. I can’t really comment on that because I don’t know.”
Jacobs is likely facing a suspension from the NFL as the league always has a separate investigation from the legal process.
Jacobs’ initial appearance in Brown County is Nov. 17, the week of the Packers’ bye.
Jacobs is entering his eighth season in the NFL and third with the Packers. He spent the first five years of his NFL career with the Oakland/Las Vegas Raiders and became one of the game’s top running backs. Jacobs led the NFL in rushing yards in 2022 with 1,653 yards.
He signed as a free agent with the Packers in 2024 and went on to have his fourth 1,000-yard rushing season of his career to go with a career-best 15 rushing touchdowns. Jacobs, a three-time Pro Bowler, battled through injuries last season but still played in 15 games and had 13 rushing TDs.
Packers reporters Tom Silverstein, Ryan Wood and Dominique Yates looked back on their takeaways from the preseason, roster projections and what’s next for Josh Jacobs, who has been criminally charged with battery.

J. Michael Sturdivant reacts to huge game vs Cardinals
Christopher Kuhagen
Did J. Michael Sturdivant do enough to earn a roster spot on the Packers?
Here’s what the rookie undrafted free agent said after his 112-yard, one-touchdown game against the Cardinals in the Packers’ preseason finale:

Will J. Michael Sturdivant make the Packers roster?
Christopher Kuhagen
Since 2005, at least one undrafted rookie free agent has made the Packers’ season-opening roster.
Is that streak going to continue in 2026?
After the performance that J. Michael Sturdivant put on tape in the Packers’ 42-38 preseason victory over the Arizona Cardinals, he appears a top candidate to have that honor.
Sturdivant had a team-high six catches and 112 yards with a touchdown.
On the Packers’ first touchdown of the game in the second quarter – a 48-second, two-play drive – Sturdivant showed his ability to stretch the field as he was the target on both throws from Kyle McCord.
The first reception went for 36 yards down the middle, getting the Packers to the Cardinals 29-yard line. On the next play, his number was called again and he caught a 29-yard touchdown pass in stride on the left side.
With all the starters sitting the game out, it was a chance for Sturdivant and others further on the depth chart to make a final impression.
And Sturdivant certainly did that.
During the preseason, he had nine receptions for 142 yards and one touchdown. He averaged 15.8 yards per catch.
The Packers signed Sturdivant following the draft in the spring. Sturdivant played his college football at Florida, UCLA and Cal.

When is NFL roster deadline?
Christopher Kuhagen
The deadline for all NFL teams to have their rosters at 53 players is 5 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 30.
Teams that have finished their preseason schedules – all but four teams – will likely begin making roster transactions on Saturday.
In addition to the players who make the 53-man roster, the team will sign players to their practice squad.
Last season, 15 players were signed to the Packers’ practice squad following roster cuts. A majority of the practice squad will be players who spent time in Packers training camp this summer.
