Heat advisory for South Florida – temperatures to feel as hot as 109 degrees
The sweltering summer weather persists across South Florida, as forecasters have issued a heat advisory for Saturday in Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach counties. Temperatures are expected to feel as hot as 109 degrees.
The advisory is in effect from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.
It also extends to parts of Florida’s Gulf Coast.
Although actual air temperatures will remain in the 90s, the heat index — a measure that combines temperature and humidity — will make conditions feel significantly hotter and pose an increased health risk.
The National Weather Service in Miami typically issues a heat advisory when the heat index reaches 105 degrees for at least a couple of hours. Before 2023, advisories weren’t triggered unless the index hit 108 degrees.
Officials are warning that the extreme heat and humidity could lead to heat-related illnesses, especially for individuals working outdoors or spending extended time outside.
To stay safe, people are advised to:
- Stay well-hydrated by drinking plenty of water
- Avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight
- Take regular breaks in shaded or air-conditioned spaces
- Check in on vulnerable individuals, such as the elderly and young children
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration recommends that outdoor workers take frequent rest breaks and stay alert for signs of heat exhaustion or heat stroke. If a heat-related emergency occurs, call 911 immediately.
