House leaders unveiled a seven-week government funding extension Tuesday that could help Congress avert a shutdown at the end of the month — if Democrats get on board.
The House plans to vote on the continuing resolution by Friday, and the Senate could follow as soon as this weekend. But the threat of a funding lapse after Sept. 30 remains real.
Democratic leaders have dug their heels in, saying they will not support a CR without extensions for health care subsidies that expire in January.
But Republicans have rejected the possibility of including those extensions in the funding patch, forcing Democrats to either vote for the “clean” funding extension or stare down a shutdown.
