Hendrix and Kelley Fuel No. 12 TCU to 3-1 Victory over No. 18 Kansas
FORT WORTH – With the offense firing on all cylinders, No. 12 TCU volleyball dominated No. 18 Kansas 3-1 on Wednesday night inside Schollmaier Arena.
The Horned Frogs (12-3, 2-1 Big 12) picked up their sixth win over a ranked opponent this year and earned their 16th consecutive victory at home, dating back to last season.
Sophomores Becca Kelley and Evan Hendrix led the TCU attack with 21 and 20 kills, respectively. For Kelley, it marked a career-high, topping the 19 she totaled against Cincinnati last year. Hendrix finished with a double-double, racking up 13 digs, but the most impressive part of her night was her efficiency. The Scottsdale, Arizona, product hit at a blistering .526 clip with no errors on 38 swings.
Setters Rosemary Archer and Ella Foti brilliantly guided the offense to their most complete match of the season. The Frogs hit .352 as a team, while holding Kansas (10-7, 1-2 Big 12) to a .193 mark thanks to five blocks from Sarah Sylvester and 14 digs by libero Alice Volpe.
Led by a seven-kill frame from Kelley, the Frogs quickly secured the opening set. Following a 6-4 start that featured back-to-back aces from freshman Samara Coleman, TCU went on an 11-2 run to bring the score to 17-6. The Frogs handled business, pushing the lead to double-digits to win the first set, 25-15.
TCU carried the momentum into the second set, jumping to an early 6-2 lead. However, Kansas had an answer this time, rattling off a 7-2 run to take a 9-8 lead before the Frogs were forced to call a timeout. With both teams trading points, it was kills from Sylvester and Kelley that helped TCU retake control of the set at 17-13. The Jayhawks rallied and cut the lead to one at 22-21, but the Frogs held on strong as Kelley finished off the second set with a pair of kills to hand TCU a 25-23 victory.
Kansas refused to give up though, as they found life and stormed out to a commanding 9-1 lead to open the third set. The Frogs won five of the next six points to cut the lead to four, but the Jayhawks relented and brought the set to 13-7. Following a kill from Lauren Murphy, TCU went on a 5-1 run to bring the deficit to two at 14-12. Kansas continued to apply pressure and restored its lead to five points. With set point, the Frogs made things interesting, going on a 4-0 run, but the Jayhawks survived 25-23 and forced a fourth set.
Looking to close out the match, Kelley took over the fourth set from the get-go. She was responsible for five of TCU’s first seven points, eventually tallying a career-best 21 kills on the night. The Frogs took a 10-4 lead and began to pile it on, scoring five of the next six points as Kansas burned both of its timeouts. TCU never let the lead drop below eight points as the Frogs took the fourth set 25-15 to win the match.
No. 12 TCU is back in action on Sunday, October 4, in Lubbock against Texas Tech at 1 p.m. CT.
