Cuba said its soldiers killed four people and wounded six others aboard a Florida-registered boat that had entered Cuban waters and opened fire on the soldiers first, injuring one Cuban officer.
The registration number for the boat provided by the Cuban government, FL7726SH, showed it was a 24-foot Pro-Line center console fishing vessel built in 1981.
According to an incident report by the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded later Wednesday to Avenue G in Big Pine Key for a report of a stolen boat.

NBC6 The boat involved in the deadly shooting off of Cuba’s coast on Wednesday may have been stolen from the Florida Keys the day before, according to a report from the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office. This photo shows the white truck authorities say belongs to the suspect.
The victim said that his boat, whose registration matches the one provided by Cuban authorities, had been docked on the property. He noticed it was missing at around 9:30 a.m., and saw a truck belonging to the suspect, Hector Duardy Cruz Correa, in the lot.
The victim said Cruz Correa did tile work for him, and he did not have permission to take his boat. His multiple calls to Cruz Correa went unanswered, and he believed that “Hector took his boat to go fishing,” the incident report states.
Later Wednesday, the victim started to get calls “from news media about a vessel that was taken to Cuba and involved in a shooting,” authorities said. He contacted the sheriff’s office and said he wanted to press charges against Cruz Correa.
Meanwhile, a neighbor told deputies that on Tuesday evening, she had noticed a man drive to the property in a white pickup truck and board the boat, which she found odd because the vessel’s owner didn’t “usually go out that late.”
Homeland Security Investigations officials could be seen at the lot on Thursday.
Who is Hector Duardy Cruz Correa?
Cuban authorities later identified Cruz Correa as one of the men who were killed in the confrontation at sea.
The victim told authorities that the suspect has family in Cuba, including two young daughters.
When asked about his last conversations with Cruz Correa, he said the suspect had been “trying to repair a large boat with twin motors” which was having issues.
The victim said he let Cruz Correa borrow a trailer, in which he “put another large vessel… that he was trying to repair as well.” He said he didn’t know why the suspect might have been trying to repair the vessels.
