Australia and UK strengthen partnership on safe and secure AI

The new MoU will offer a framework for technical cooperation and promote the safe and responsible use of artificial intelligence (AI). 

The MoU strengthens collaboration between the Australian AI Safety Institute, which is currently being established, and the UK AI Security Institute.

Under the MoU, both parties aim to: 

• share information and expertise on emerging AI capabilities and risks, and best practices for testing AI systems
• conduct joint research, including approaches to measure, test and manage risks
• support the multilateral work of the International Network for Advanced AI Measurement, Evaluation and Science.

The MoU supports the Australian Government’s National AI Plan. The plan aims to keep Australians safe by strengthening international cooperation on AI risks and safety. Australia can respond to the fast pace of AI development by working with our trusted partners.

This partnership will help both countries keep pace with change and ensure communities share the benefits of AI. As AI systems become more powerful and widely used, governments must act quickly to keep Australians safe and maintain public trust.

This agreement highlights the shared commitment of Australia and the UK to ensure AI remains safe, trustworthy and beneficial for everyone.
