Even Justin Herbert’s most staunch defender wants to see more from the quarterback.

Los Angeles Chargers head coach Jim Harbaugh told reporters on Monday that he wants to see improved decision-making from the quarterback.

​”Be better. Be better,” Harbaugh said. “And that drives Justin, that drives me, that drives his position coach, that drives Mike [McDaniel], the coordinator. I mean, drives us all.”

Given Harbaugh’s insistence on defending the quarterback at seemingly every turn since he was hired before the 2024 season, it’s a notable critique.

Herbert finished 20 of 34 for 226 yards, one touchdown and one interception in the team’s 24-16 loss to the Bills on Sunday, which dropped Los Angeles to 0-3 this season. He struggled particularly on deep throws (20+ air yards), going 1 of 7 for 29 yards and an INT. Herbert has now thrown more deep-pass interceptions this season (3) than in either of the previous two seasons (2 in 2024, 2 in 2025). The QB has thrown an interception while failing to throw for multiple touchdowns in four consecutive starts dating back to Week 17 of last season. It ties Cooper Rush and Daniel Jones for the longest active streak in the NFL and the longest of Herbert’s career.
