Environment and Heritage’s BioNet Atlas map viewer

NSW Environment and Heritage has announced the new online BioNet Atlas map viewer as a way to visualise the Bionet biodiversity data repository.

According to Environment and Heritage — part of the NSW Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water — Bionet Atlas is “the NSW repository for species names, species sightings, systematic survey and threatened biodiversity data”.

The new map viewer enables users to easily search on species sightings records using interactive features and advanced filters, as well as share a query or export the results.

Environment and Heritage says the new map viewer enables users to:

• Search across geographic areas, taxonomy, legal status and dates
• Filter on up to 20 target species at a time
• Save and share searches using unique query links
• Download up to 1 million records in a single export
• Access additional standardised data fields in downloads
• Explore records with detailed base maps and imagery
• Use the application on desktop, tablet and mobile devices.

Data collections available include:

• Species Sightings
• Systematic Flora surveys
• Systematic Fauna surveys
• Threatened Biodiversity Profiles
• Species names
• Vegetation Classification
• Vegetation Class and Formation
• NSW Landscapes
• Vegetation maps

Those users who have a Bionet Atlas account can access the maximum number of records and fields available under their data access level.

The existing BioNet Atlas species sightings search application and map viewer will stay available, enabling users to continue current workflows while making the change to the new map viewer.

Environment and Heritage is expected to soon announce a webinar that will showcase the new map viewer and provide advice on how best to make use of it.
