CHARLESTON, S.C. – The No. 3-ranked Vanderbilt men’s golf team sits in first place on the team leaderboard at The Bryson Invitational after 18 holes of play, as the Commodores carded 10-under 278 in Monday’s opening round.

Vandy had four golfers finish Monday inside the top 20 on the player leaderboard, as four Dores carded under par in Round 1. Junior Chase Nevins is tied for second place at The Bryson Invitational, as the Great Falls, Virginia, native posted a season-best 4-under 68 in the opening round. Nevins led the field in par-3 scoring at 2-under, while his five birdies were tied for 10th most in Round 1.

The No. 3 Commodores hold a two-stroke lead over No. 21-ranked Wake Forest and Kansas (RV). Vanderbilt is seeking its second-straight team title after ending the Ben Hogan Collegiate Invitational in a four-way tie for first its last time out. The Dores are also in search of their third team trophy overall during the 2025 fall season.

“I was proud of the guys coming out ready to roll and getting off to a strong start this morning,” said Thomas F. Roush, M.D., and Family Vanderbilt Men’s Golf Head Coach Scott Limbaugh. “It was pretty windy today, and I thought the course was a good test, which is good preparation for things we will see later in the spring. It was important for us to have all five guys in it today, and that will be important going forward. Chase gave us a big lift today and led the team in a positive way.  Wells was solid from start to finish as well, as he looked comfortable in today’s conditions.”

Senior Wells Williams ended his first go-around at Daniel Island Club at 3-under 69 and goes into play on Tuesday in a tie for 11th. Sophomore Ryan Downes sits one stroke behind at 2-under 70 and begins Round 2 in a tie for 14th.

Freshman Jon Ed Steed was one of two Dores to collect an eagle on Monday, as he finished 2-under on the par-5 Hole 6. Steed ended play tied for 19th at 1-under 71. Fellow freshman Michael Riebe carded Vanderbilt’s other eagle on Monday, as he went 2-under on the par-5 Hole 3 to help finish his day at even par. Riebe heads into Tuesday in a tie for 30th.

Monday’s score of 278 is the lowest round score the Dores have carded this season. Meanwhile, the 10-under in Round 1 at The Bryson Invitational is Vanderbilt’s second-lowest round score vs. par this season, second to only the 14-under performance in Round 2 of the Carmel Cup.

The Commodores have a pair of individuals playing at The Bryson Invitational this week. Senior John Broderick concluded Round 1 in a tie for 41st at 1-over 73, while freshman Will Hartman’s score of 2-over 74 ties him for 46th at the end of play on Monday.

Vanderbilt tees off Round 2 of The Bryson Invitational between 8:40-9:20 a.m. CT from Hole 1 on Tuesday. Vandy’s two individual golfers tee off between 9:20-9:30 a.m. CT from Hole 11.
