Man dead, deputy hospitalized in shooting outside Cooper City McDonald’s
COOPER CITY, Fla. — A man was killed and a Broward Sheriff’s Office deputy was hospitalized Saturday afternoon after a shooting outside a McDonald’s in Cooper City, authorities confirmed.
A white sheet covered the body of the person shot, while the surrounding parking lot was cordoned off with multiple layers of crime scene tape.
Claudinne Caro, Broward Sheriff’s Office public information officer, said deputies were called shortly after noon to the 10200 block of Griffin Road following reports that a man had been shot.
When the first deputy arrived, she said the man attacked the officer, prompting the deputy to discharge his weapon.
Witnesses said the man had been arguing with his mother in the parking lot near a truck before the shooting occurred.
“I came outside and as soon as I looked over I saw an officer drawing his gun and running through the parking lot,” said Allison Lake, who works at a nearby salon.
She described the law enforcement response as overwhelming.
“I was like is that really what I’m seeing? But he definitely had his gun drawn and was running across the parking lot,” she said.
Authorities said paramedics transported the deputy and the man’s mother to a nearby hospital. Neither sustained gunshot wounds.
“It’s kinda scary. You’re just not safe anywhere you go at this point,” Lake said.
Investigators said the man was pronounced dead at the scene. The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is leading the investigation, which is standard for deputy-involved shootings.
No additional details about the identities of the deputy or the man have been released.
