Prime Video’s 16-Episode Sci-Fi Series Found the Winning Formula for Video Game Adaptations

Video game adaptations have long been the bane of Hollywood’s existence until the 2020s cracked the code. Shows like The Last of Us proved video games deserve adaptations that are just as poignant as any other medium. Series such as God of War were fast-tracked, but no video game franchise is as effective as Prime Video’s immaculate sci-fi show, Fallout.

The Bethesda game series is one of the most beloved properties and has been a role-playing hallmark since the late 90s. The world is unique as it combines the nostalgia of the 1950s with concerns of atomic warfare, which come to fruition in the game’s universe. Unlike The Last of Us, Fallout doesn’t have a strict narrative that can be transposed onto the small screen. The game adaptation released in 2024 outpaced any other attempt because it was more creative and had the ability to create an original story that still respects the source material.

Prime Video’s ‘Fallout’ Is the Perfect Balancing Act

Creating a one-for-one adaptation can often be a double-edged sword for video game adaptations. Even The Last of Us, which is a pretty close translation of Neil Druckmann’s Naughty Dog masterpiece, has been controversial. Fallout circumvents this altogether due to the beautifully malleable nature of the subject material.

Fallout 4 and Fallout: New Vegas are arguably the most beloved properties of the franchise and have nowhere near the defined narrative that games such as The Last of Us and God of War have. This allowed creatives Jonathan Nolan and his partner Lisa Joy to create a personal journey while staying true to the mechanics of the game.

Prime Video’s Fallout was created by people who have immense love for the world, and that comes through in the writing. Even though the series invents, it feels just as at home in the Fallout universe as the games do. The 16-episode series follows a Vault Dweller, Lucy (Ella Purnell), an original invention, who has the feel of just another character in the video game.

Descended from those who bought rooms in a vault in the case that a nuclear event occurred, Lucy and her family have been living underground for generations. Just as in the game, these people wear the blue jumpsuits, carry the Pip-Boys, and carry out the irreverent humor from the games. Fallout finds an original way for Lucy to leave the vault, a decision that is full of narrative drama perfect for a long-running television series. The show incorporates beloved characters like Dogmeat and sentient Ghouls (Walton Goggins), as well as mechanics like drug addiction and radiation. Fallout proves that a video game series doesn’t have to be married to the literal events of the game, just the spirit.

Previous adaptations like Resident Evil were considered failures because they strayed from the source material literally and figuratively. Paul W.S. Anderson’s original film was essentially a Resident Evil story in name only, which is what makes fans so excited for the Zach Cregger version. The upcoming movie takes a page from the Fallout handbook by inventing a new narrative, but one that could conceivably take place in the world. This is a new era of video game adaptation, and it is thanks to Jonathan Nolan’s inventive and entertaining Prime Video series.
