COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Goalkeeper Molly Schreiner registered a career-high 11 saves as James Madison field hockey was outshot 25-4 in a 1-0 loss to Stanford in the Conference Cup on Sunday morning at the Maryland Field Hockey and Lacrosse Complex.

Natalie Hoppe scored the game-winning goal with a deflection off a pass from Scout Butler on a penalty corner situation at the 10:53 mark of the third. Daisy Ford made a trio of saves for her third career shutout.

The Dukes (1-1) defended 14 Cardinal (1-1) corners, while JMU earned three.

Schreiner’s 11-save outing marked her second career game with double-digit saves, stopping 10 shots against Cal on Sept. 22, 2024. Alice Roeper placed two of her three shots on goal, while Sydney Raguini managed to put one on cage.

How It Happened

  • The JMU defense faced heavy pressure in the opening frame, with Schreiner having to stop four shots.
  • At the half, the Cardinal held an advantage in shots (11-1), shots on goal (8-1) and penalty corners (4-0). Meanwhile, Schreiner accumulated eight saves to keep the game tied at 0-0 at the intermission.
  • After denying Stanford on its first six corner attempts, the Cardinal finally broke through with a Hoppe tip-in from Butler just over four minutes into the third.
  • James Madison finally earned a pair of penalty corners late in the third, however, both of Roeper’s shots from the top of the circle were denied by Ford, keeping it a 1-0 game heading into the final period.
  • JMU pulled Schreiner with 1:17 remaining for an extra attacker, but the Dukes failed to put a shot on net.

Game Notes

  • Since 2023, the Dukes have lost 12 one-score games, including four in overtime and three to ranked opponents. In that time, JMU has posted a 20-19 (.513) record.
  • Eleven saves are the most by a JMU netminder since former Duke Brandelynn Heinbaugh turned away 16 shots at William & Mary on Aug. 25, 2023.
  • Stanford’s 25 shots are the most by a JMU opponent since Maryland took 25 shots against the Dukes on Sept. 15, 2019. Additionally, the last time James Madison faced 14 or more corners came last season when Old Dominion recorded 16 on Oct. 13.
  • Lastly, JMU’s four shots are the fewest for the program since producing four shots at Miami (Ohio) on Sept. 20, 2024.

Up Next
JMU will remain on the road as it treks down to Lynchburg, Va. to face No. 17 Liberty on Wednesday, Sept. 3. Game time is slated for 2 p.m. and will stream on ESPN+.
