SPRING HILL, Fla. — A Rainbow Woods resident who waited years for speed humps in her neighborhood says the new traffic-calming devices on Augustine Road are not slowing drivers as intended.
Linda Allen says speeding remains a concern in the Hernando County community, where neighbors had pushed for speed humps as traffic increased through the area.
“We were really excited that we had gotten speed humps approved,” Allen said. “It took five years.”
Allen said the three new humps installed on Augustine Road earlier this year have not worked the way she was hoping they would.
“I don’t even consider them speed humps,” Allen said. “They just look like some asphalt put on the ground. It has not slowed traffic down. People aren’t even slowing down to go over the speed humps.”
When asked about the concerns, Hernando County officials pointed to a recent meeting where commissioners voted to approve the assessment on Rainbow Woods residents to pay for the new humps. County officials said they had received complaints from only one resident.
Rainbow Woods residents were assessed $236 for the installation. The total project cost $41,600, according to county records.
The county also said mailers were sent to residents about the recent meeting on the new speed humps, but no one showed up. Allen said she did not have enough notice.
So she would like public works teams to see how the speed humps are working, especially as more development in the area brings increased traffic.
“The way it was explained to us, it sounded like it was going to be more of a deterrent than what it is,” Allen said.
