Vanderbosch Sets Record, Orange Lose at #3 Stanford

The Orange record fell to 4-5-4 overall and 0-4-1 in the ACC while Stanford improved to 9-1-1 and 3-0-1. The pairing with the Cardinal represented Syracuse’s third contest against a top-10 opponent in the last four outings.

HOW THE MATCH WAS DECIDED

Stanford, the top-ranked offensive squad in Division I soccer, scored three times in the first 10:12 of the match to build a secure advantage. The Cardinal struck first when Jasmine Aikey crossed to Andrea Kitahata in front and Kitahata redirected the ball into an open net for her seventh goal of the season. Eleanor Klinger also earned an assist on the play. The tally occurred :55 into the match.

The Cardinal kept the pressure on following the opening score and added to the lead with Klinger’s strike into the bottom left of the goal after set-up passes from Allie Montoya and Shae Harvey. Klinger’s fourth goal of the campaign was followed less than three minutes later by Montoya’s sixth. Elise Evans passed to Montoya, who found the top right of the net at 10:12.

ORANGE DEFENSE STABILIZES

Syracuse’s defense managed to settle in after the opening Stanford attack. The Orange held the Cardinal scoreless the rest of the opening period, thanks in part to Vanderbosch. The senior netminder came up with four saves prior to the break, including stops on Klinger, Aikey, and Brilly Bray.

Syracuse’s best chance prior to the intermission came from Emma Klein in front of a crowded box. Klein’s attempt was stopped by Stanford keeper Caroline Birkel.

ANOTHER STANFORD STRIKE

The second half started much like the first with Stanford scoring less than one minute in. Charlotte Kohler served the ball up, Harvey headed it toward the Syracuse net, and Aikey finished the series with her left foot. It was Aikey’s ninth goal of the campaign.

SYRACUSE ATTEMPTS TO ANSWER

Four of Syracuse’s five shots on goal came after the intermission. Senior Mia Klammer created the best opportunity with a drive that hit off the cross bar after Stanford’s Alyssa Savig got a hand on it. Gabby Wisbeck and Vita Naihin had consecutive tries on net in 57th minute. Anna Ruppert had a good look that was stymied by Savig and Liv Bozzo headed a free kick from Cierra Collins that Savig made a strong play on.

VANDERBOSCH’S STANDARD

Vanderbosch’s second save of the afternoon broke the Syracuse record for career saves (344). Vanderbosch extended her new mark to 359 with six saves in the match. The record had been held by Courtney Brosnan, who accumulated 344 saves between 2014-17.
