AURORA, Ontario — After back-to-back 71s (-1), senior Mara Janess recorded a career-low 142 (-2) 36-hole total on Tuesday (Sept. 23), guiding the University of Michigan women’s golf team to a sixth-place finish with a 584 tally at the inaugural Canadian Collegiate Invitational, played at the Beacon Hall Golf Club.

Heavy storms on Monday morning (Sept. 22) forced officials to reduce the event to 36 holes. Following a lengthy delay, the 12-team field completed the opening round, with Michigan carding a 295 to sit fifth. Janess led the Wolverines with her first 71 (-1), highlighted by three birdies and 13 pars. In her collegiate debut, freshman Vanessa Zhang showed poise, recovering from being four-over through 14 holes with three straight birdies to close at 73 (+1).

Janess backed up her opener with a second 71 (-1), posting her fifth career top-10 finish, tying for seventh overall. Zhang followed with an even-par 72, while senior Lauren Sung added a 73 (+1). The trio’s strong play powered U-M to a final-round 289, securing a sixth-place team finish.

Recording a 145 (+1) total, Zhang notched her second straight top-20 finish, tying for 17th overall. Earlier this month, she tied for 16th in her collegiate debut at the Wolverine Invitational (Sept. 7-8). Senior Sung added a tie for 28th after posting a 148 (75-73).

The Wolverines resume their fall slate in October, traveling to Medinah, Ill., for the Illini Women’s Invitational (Oct. 6-7). The 54-hole event will be contested over two days at the historic Medinah Country Club.
