Despite repeated disasters over the decades making it seem like video game movies are doomed to fail, there has been no shortage of fantastic game to movie adaptations in recent years that prove it’s still possible to beat the curse set by their predecessors. With even Nintendo joining in on the fun by rebooting their failure of the 1993 Super Mario Bros. movie and exciting projects like Elden Ring on the horizon, it’s clear the future is bright for fans of both mediums.
Some honorable upcoming mentions include the A Minecraft Movie Squared (July 23, 2027), Five Nights at Freddy’s 3 (2027), and Call of Duty (June 30, 2028).
Following the success of major gaming franchise adaptations like The Super Mario Bros. Movie and A Minecraft Movie, even more studios have started to join in the trend with countless upcoming game to movie adaptations for fans to look forward to. Even if some end up getting lost or canceled along the way, there are still more than a few incredibly exciting movies on the horizon based on legendary gaming franchises.
Resident Evil (September 18, 2026)
While there has been no shortage of Resident Evil movies that vary drastically in quality, the latest film directed by Zach Cregger already looks like one of the most promising adaptations yet. Acting as a reboot of the series, the newest Resident Evil movie will follow a brand-new protagonist in the form of a medical courier who gets caught up in the midst of a horrifying mutated outbreak.
Following Cregger’s directorial experience on the popular horror films Barbarian and Weapons, the new Resident Evil movie already seems to understand what makes the games so popular more than past adaptations. Instead of the over-the-top action sequences of later entries, this take on the franchise is primed to place a greater focus on the survival horror elements that made the series so popular in the first place.
Street Fighter (October 16, 2026)
The Street Fighter franchise is no stranger to having its adaptations make their way to the silver screen, albeit with even less success than the Resident Evil series. While the fighting game series has thrived more in the animated and TV formats, the upcoming Street Fighter movie has the perfect chance to right the wrongs of its predecessors, with the trailer pulling all the stops for its over-the-top fan-favorite characters.
Offering a star-studded cast playing some of the most iconic fighters from the franchise, the new Street Fighter movie promises to offer a thrilling narrative of its characters being thrust into a new World Warrior Tournament with a hidden conspiracy lurking behind the scenes. With countless character references and stunning set design, the Street Fighter movie will also lean more heavily into the supernatural side of the series, with powerful abilities and superhuman-like feats galore.
Sonic The Hedgehog 4 (March 19, 2027)
It doesn’t feel like much of a stretch to say that the Sonic films have been one of the major reasons we’ve seen such a resurgence in video game adaptations, with the upcoming release of Sonic the Hedgehog 4 being one of the most exciting outings yet for the series. With each movie somehow managing to outdo the rest, the third film was an engaging comedic action ride from start to finish, while offering a familiar yet fresh take on fan-favorite characters.
Paramount has officially confirmed that Jim Carrey will also be reprising his role as Eggman in Sonic the Hedgehog 4.
With Sonic The Hedgehog 4 bringing in an even wider array of beloved characters like Amy Rose, Metal Sonic, and potentially even more heroes or villains from across the series, expectations are higher than ever for what story the creators can come up with for its ever-expanding cinematic universe.
The Legend of Zelda (April 30, 2027)
It’s hard to imagine a video game adaptation with as much widespread appeal as The Legend of Zelda, easily making it expected to be one of the biggest films of 2027. Following decades of Nintendo’s hesitation to release movies after some brutal failures in the past, The Super Mario Bros. movie has opened the floodgates for new adaptations, with The Legend of Zelda being the first live-action project from the studio since 1993.
While we don’t know too much about the film’s storyline so far or what era of the series it will adapt, if any at all, the few glimpses we’ve had of the cast and set design already look incredibly promising. With no shortage of story material or Easter eggs to make for an excellent viewing experience, The Legend of Zelda movie could easily have plenty to offer for fans and new watchers alike.
Helldivers (November 10, 2027)
After becoming PlayStation’s fastest-selling game of all time, Sony announced that we would be getting a Helldivers movie adaptation less than a year after its release, which is currently set to be directed by Justin Lin, who previously worked on the Fast and the Furious films. Although the project has come under fire for its director having never played the games before, there is still plenty of excitement surrounding the upcoming project.
While the highly anticipated sci-fi adaptation is still aiming for a November 2027 release date, after its lead left the project in July 2026, it wouldn’t be surprising for the movie to get delayed closer to its premiere. Even if the film’s date does move, however, the story of Helldivers and its unique blend of action and satirical humor still has plenty of potential for the big screen, with the potential to become the new generation’s Starship Troopers.
Elden Ring (March 3, 2028)
After having blown the sales figures of FromSoftware’s previous Dark Souls games out of the water, it wasn’t too surprising that Elden Ring ended up getting a movie adaptation of its own, which is being made in a partnership between its original developers and A24. While there is no shortage of material to pull from in Elden Ring‘s expansive world, we already have a few clues of what to look forward to from the exciting fantasy project.
While we don’t ‘officially’ know a lot about the Elden Ring movie or its plot so far, leaked screenshots from its sets during production make it seem like the film will be focusing on a far earlier era of The Lands Between, before the shattering. Considering that FromSoftware games never have the most linear storylines, the movie acting as a prequel could offer an even greater understanding of Elden Ring and the events that resulted in the game’s narrative.
Bloodborne (TBA)
As if an Elden Ring movie adaptation wasn’t enough, FromSoftware is even getting involved in making an animated R-rated Bloodborne movie with Sony, Lyrical Animation, and produced by none other than the YouTuber JackSepticEye. While the celebrity personality has caused more than a few initial shocks and confusion from fans, it’s easier to understand after the smashing success of the independently released Iron Lung film by Mark Fischbach, also known as Markiplier.
Having only just started its early stages of development, we once again know very little about the project so far, other than that JackSepticEye has stated that he’s a major fan of the game and hopes to live up to the massive expectations of players for the adaptation. While fans are still eagerly awaiting either a Bloodborne remaster or PC port, a feature-length film is the perfect thing to tie us over in the meantime.
Gears Of War (TBA)
While the Gears of War movie adaptation was officially announced all the way back in 2007, we’ve finally been getting some promising updates on the project’s development under Netflix. Following an origin story of how Delta Squad came to be before the full outbreak of the Locust War, it will supposedly follow the ragtag team desperately trying to survive and adapt to their new enemies, not dissimilar to the newest Gears of War: E-Day prequel.
With the screenwriter who helped bring the Dune films to life alongside the director of The Fall Guy currently in talks to lead its production, it seems like the upcoming Gears of War film is finally starting to come together after two decades of waiting.
Sea of Thieves (TBA)
Having only recently been announced to have started the early stages of development, the upcoming Sea of Thieves film aims to take the live service adventure onto the big screen, which is being spearheaded by the filmmaker behind Spider-Man: Brand New Day as the producer.
Even without as much of a narrative focus as the other projects currently in production, it’s been years since we’ve had a true pirate adventure on the silver screen. Given that we’re still waiting for the sixth Pirates of the Caribbean film, the Sea of Thieves movie could also be the perfect spiritual successor to the beloved franchise, with its similarly unique game world being an excellent choice for an immersive moviegoing experience.
The Metal Gear Movie has been in production hell for well over two decades at this point, with countless revivals and exchanges of hands over the years. While it seemed like the project would never see the light of day, it got a major update in 2026 with Sony Columbia Pictures signing on the creators Zach Lipovsky and Adam B. Stein from Final Destination: Bloodlines.
While it’s not the first time we’ve had a name attached to a potential Metal Gear Solid movie, both creators have expressed that they are big fans of the source material and are “honored to bring Hideo Kojima’s iconic characters and unforgettable world to life,” according to an interview with The Hollywood Reporter. While only time will tell if the latest endeavor works out or not, it’s hard to think of a gaming franchise — even Elden RIng — that deserves a movie adaptation more than the already cinematic Metal Gear Solid.
