Andrew Gillum narrowly lost to Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis as the Democratic candidate in the 2018 general election.
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — Andrew Gillum, former Tallahassee mayor and Democratic candidate for Florida governor, was arrested last week in Alabama on drug charges.
According to online jail records, Gillum, 46, was arrested in Daphne, Alabama, on July 2 and charged with possession of dangerous drugs, drug paraphernalia and possession of marijuana.
He was released from jail the next day.
Gillum was the Democratic challenger to Gov. Ron DeSantis during the 2018 general election, losing by just a narrow margin. He got 49.2% of the vote compared to DeSantis’ 49.6%.
Gillum last made headlines in 2023, when he was acquitted of lying to the FBI in a corruption case that also involved illegal use of campaign contributions.
And back in 2020, Miami Beach police said they found Gillum inebriated in a room at the Mondrian Hotel with two other men. According to a police report obtained by CBS News, officers found three small bags of methamphetamine at the scene. No charges were ever filed in this case.
Gillum released a statement after the Miami Beach incident, saying he had been drinking at a wedding the night before. He also apologized and denied taking crystal meth.
