Lane County needs leaders to stand up for our environment | Letter to the editor

It’s so important to know who is standing up for clean air, clean water and financial accountability in Lane County.

Lane County commissioners Heather Buch, Pat Farr and Laurie Trieger voted in favor of developing the CleanLane methane retrieval facility. Commissioners David Lovell and Ryan Ceniga voted no. Now Buch is being challenged by candidate Jake Pelroy, a waste industry insider with an obvious conflict of interest who also managed Ceniga’s campaign. If Pelroy wins the race for county commissioner, the voting majority on the board will essentially wipe out the Clean Lane facility.

The largest trash hauler in Lane County, Sanipac, is owned by a ten-billion-dollar public corporation in Texas: Waste Connections. Sanipac is trucking our local waste to a facility in the Medford area owned by Waste Connections. This represents an absurd waste of our money, siphoning off millions of dollars that should actually stay in our county to benefit our local compost, recycling and hazardous waste programs. Don’t you think Lane County could put some of that big money to good use for our own citizens?

Enough already. It’s time to vote out the bums! Loveall and Ceniga have got to go, and Pelroy must not get in!

Commissioner Heather Buch has been a constructive force faithfully serving the residents of East Lane County. She cares about our air and water, and she understands the importance of keeping our local money for our local needs. Heather Buch deserves your vote.
