MADISON — The Wisconsin Department of Health Services reported 61 confirmed cases of Cyclosporiasis in the state, with the majority of infections traced to international travel.
Cyclosporiasis is an illness caused by a parasite found in contaminated produce and water. The infection causes prolonged diarrhea and other gastrointestinal symptoms in those affected.
Most of the infections were from international travel with 11 acquired in the country. There’s only been one hospitalization reported.
Dr. Kimberly Zelton, a foodborne illness epidemiologist with the Wisconsin Department of Health Services, emphasized the importance of proper food handling to prevent infection.
“Any produce can have germs on it that could make you sick, and should be stored away from things like raw meat,” Zelton said.
The department will continue to monitor Cyclosporiasis cases and release updated counts every Wednesday to keep the public informed of any trends or developments.
