Republicans voice new concern about gasoline prices
Some Republican lawmakers returned to Washington on Monday more worried about high gasoline prices because of the United States’ prolonged conflict with Iran.
Republicans largely dismissed high prices as temporary and manageable in the weeks following the start of the war. But with ceasefire talks on the fritz and the Strait of Hormuz remaining shut, more GOP lawmakers are now acknowledging the political realities of higher gas costs.
President Donald Trump himself told Fox News over the weekend that energy prices may remain high or go up leading to the midterm elections. It’s not what many in his party want to hear.
“It’s hurting the consumer, certainly. Gas prices are a barometer for a lot, and it’s an affordability thing,” said Environment and Public Works Chair Shelley Moore Capito (R-W.Va.).
