TUESDAY: Democrats to Hold Hearing on Protecting Elections from a Trump Takeover
(WASHINGTON) – Next Tuesday, April 28, Ranking Member Bennie G. Thompson (D-MS) and Committee on Homeland Security Democrats will hold a Democratic forum in Washington, DC to examine how we can protect our elections while President Trump threatens a Federal takeover.
The forum will expose Trump Administration efforts to undermine public confidence in election outcomes in order to justify Federal intervention in State and local election administration. Witnesses will provide first-hand accounts of Federal efforts to interfere in State and local election activities, a history of Federal election security activity after election infrastructure was designated critical infrastructure, and recommendations State and local election officials can employ to inoculate against Trump Administration efforts to interfere in election administration and slander results the President does not like. This forum will be streamed online.
“President Trump has unleashed conspiracy theories to justify federalizing elections and weaponizing the power of the Federal government against election officials and voters,” said Homeland Security Committee Ranking Member Bennie G. Thompson. “The President’s lies prioritize his ego and political prerogatives – namely maintaining a Republican Congress – over voters’ right to self-determination. Democrats must stand up to the President’s anti-democratic, abusive tactics and protect democracy.”
