Lightning on the soccer field, when to call “time out”.

Planning a summer vacation in Canada’s great outdoors? Or maybe a company soccer tournament at the nearby field?

Use our Lightning Map to stay safe!

Thanks to the Canadian Lightning Detection Network, our Map shows lightning strikes across Canada as they happen.

If you see a circle over your area, or can hear thunder, get to a safe place immediately.

❌ Picnic shelters, tents, and covered porches will not protect you from lightning.

✔️ Find an enclosed building, or all-metal vehicle with the windows up. If those aren’t an option, find a low-lying area away from trees or other tall objects.

Our Lightning Map is on your #WeatherCAN app or find it at https://ow.ly/sEHe50Zbku5

[Ambient noise of soccer field] Coaches! I checked the Environment Canada weather forecast and they announced thunderstorms [Dialogue fades] Do you know what to do when thunderstorms are in the forecast or the skies look threatening? Do you know where to find live lightning strike information in Canada? Good luck, and good game! Should the game continue, or be delayed? How would you decide? [Whistle blow] Environment and Climate Change Canadas Lightning Map shows lightning strikes in real-time, letting you know where lightning risk is greatest. Visit canada.ca/weather, or open the WeatherCAN app, and turn on the lightning layer. Brown circles indicate the location of recent lightning strikes. If you are outside and the map shows lightning near, or moving towards, your location then you’re at risk of being injured or killed by lightning. It’s not only a direct lightning strike that can change your life. Ground current, side flash, and upward leaders can all injure or kill. [Whistle blow] [Thunder rumbles] [Three whistle blows] Everybody off the field! Get to a safe location immediately, a solid building with wiring and plumbing, or an all-metal vehicle with the windows up. Stay there for 30 minutes following the last rumble of thunder. Do not shelter under a tree! And always remember… [Thunder rumbles] When thunder roars, go indoors! To see your current lighting risk, check the Lightning Map on canada.ca/weather or on the WeatherCAN app.
