Tesla launches first fully driverless Robotaxi fleet in Austin, expanding autonomous ride-hailing push

Tesla has officially introduced its first fully driverless robotaxi service in Austin, Texas, marking a significant step forward in its long-term strategy to expand autonomous ride-hailing operations.

The company announced on Wednesday that its unsupervised robotaxis are now active across the wider Austin metropolitan area. The rollout represents an expansion of Tesla’s autonomous mobility programe, which relies on its Full Self-Driving (FSD) software as a core component of its future growth strategy. Under the leadership of CEO Elon Musk, the company has increasingly shifted its focus toward artificial intelligence and robotics alongside its traditional electric vehicle business.

In a post shared on X, Tesla’s official robotaxi account confirmed the expansion, stating that “Unsupervised Robotaxi [is] now in the entire Austin Metro area.” The announcement highlights the company’s ambition to scale autonomous transportation services beyond limited pilot zones.

Tesla’s robotaxi service has been operating in Austin for close to a year in a more limited form, during which users have occasionally experienced wait times exceeding 30 minutes. According to local authorities, the company currently operates around 50 vehicles in the city. In comparison, rival autonomous vehicle operator Waymo, owned by Alphabet, reportedly runs more than 250 self-driving vehicles in the same area, indicating growing competition in the emerging robotaxi market.

Musk has previously stated that he expects fully self-driving vehicles without human safety monitors to become more common in the United States within the year, particularly following early deployments in Texas. The state has become a key testing ground due to its relatively flexible regulatory environment and strong support for autonomous vehicle innovation.

Austin holds strategic importance for Tesla’s operations. The city is home to its global headquarters at Giga factory Texas and serves as a central hub for development, testing, and deployment of next-generation mobility systems. The local regulatory framework has allowed the company to accelerate real-world trials of autonomous driving technology compared to many other U.S. regions.

The newly deployed robotaxi fleet is based on the Tesla Model Y, which is one of the company’s best-selling vehicles. The Model Y offers sufficient interior space for passengers and a higher seating position, which supports Tesla’s camera-based FSD system by providing improved visibility of road conditions in complex urban environments.

These robotaxis operate without human drivers and rely entirely on external camera systems combined with advanced neural networks. Tesla’s AI architecture uses end-to-end deep learning models trained on millions of miles of real-world driving data. This system processes visual inputs in real time, enabling the vehicle to interpret traffic conditions, navigate intersections, and respond dynamically to changing road scenarios.

The company’s approach differs from traditional autonomous systems that depend heavily on radar or lidar sensors, instead emphasizing a vision-based model powered by large-scale machine learning. Tesla claims this allows its vehicles to generalize across diverse driving environments and potentially operate in a wide range of cities without extensive reprogramming.

With the Austin rollout, Tesla is positioning itself at the forefront of the global race toward fully autonomous ride-hailing services, aiming to transform urban transportation through AI-driven mobility systems.
